Free WHOIS Lookup
Look up WHOIS/RDAP domain registration information including registrar, dates, nameservers, and domain status via the free public RDAP API.
WHOIS data is queried via the free public RDAP API (
rdap.org). Some ccTLDs and new gTLDs may not be supported. RDAP is the modern replacement for the traditional WHOIS protocol (RFC 7480). For commercial-grade WHOIS queries, consider using a dedicated WHOIS API service.

About WHOIS
Does this tool perform real WHOIS queries?
The frontend sends a POST request to
/api/whois with the domain name. It requires a backend WHOIS proxy or API service to perform the actual query. The frontend is designed to work with any compatible backend that accepts {"domain": "..."} and returns parsed WHOIS data. Without a configured backend, queries will fail with a network error. Why is the registrant contact information hidden?
Since GDPR went into effect in May 2018, most WHOIS queries redact personal contact information (name, address, email, phone) for domain registrants located in the EU or when the registrar applies privacy protection globally. You will see "REDACTED FOR PRIVACY" or the registrar's proxy contact instead of the actual registrant details. This is expected and compliant with privacy regulations.
What are gTLD, ccTLD, and new gTLD domains?
gTLDs (generic top-level domains) include classic extensions like .com, .org, and .net. ccTLDs (country-code TLDs) are two-letter extensions assigned to countries like .uk (United Kingdom), .de (Germany), and .cn (China). New gTLDs were introduced after 2013 and include extensions like .app, .dev, .blog, and .shop. Each TLD may have its own WHOIS server with different output formats.

How do I check if a domain is available to register?
Run a WHOIS lookup on the domain. If the response returns "Domain not found" or "No match for domain", the domain is likely available for registration. If it returns registration details (registrar, creation date, etc.), the domain is already taken. Note that some registrars place backorders on expiring domains, and WHOIS data is not updated in real time — a domain may show as registered for hours after being released.
What do the WHOIS status fields mean?
Common EPP status codes:
clientTransferProhibited and serverTransferProhibited block domain transfers. clientUpdateProhibited prevents modification. clientDeleteProhibited prevents deletion. clientHold suspends the domain (DNS will not resolve). pendingDelete means the domain is in its final deletion phase (typically 5 days during the redemption grace period). Status codes starting with "client" are set by the registrar; "server" codes are set by the registry.
